Mustard Seed Ministries prepares nearly 1,500 Thanksgiving meals in Fort Pierce

More than 100 volunteers joined Mustard Seed Ministries on Thursday to prepare and distribute nearly 1,500 Thanksgiving meals outside St. Anastasia Catholic School. With rising food insecurity across St. Lucie County, organizers said the effort ensured families in need — and those without loved ones nearby — could still enjoy a holiday meal. St. Lucie County Fire District personnel cooked more than 100 turkeys, and meals were handed out.

227-foot ship sunk off St. Lucie Inlet becomes Treasure Coast’s newest artificial reef

The 227-foot freighter Borocho, was sunk on Nov. 18 to create the Boo McCulley artificial reef roughly nine miles off the St. Lucie Inlet. Experts say transient fish species such as amberjack, cobia, kingfish and snapper will begin gathering around the structure within days. As baitfish assemble and nutrients settle, the reef is expected to rapidly attract marine life seeking shelter, vertical structure and feeding opportunities.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office equips patrol vehicles with new AEDs

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has purchased 89 new automated external defibrillators for patrol vehicles, filling a critical gap in emergency response. Sheriff Richard Del Toro said he was surprised to learn patrol units previously carried none. The new Powerheart G5 AEDs will allow deputies to respond more effectively to sudden cardiac arrest calls, where every second matters. Seventy-seven units have already been deployed, with full patrol outfitting expected by next year.

The Spotlight: Changemakers

Council on Aging of St. Lucie (COASL)

Founded in 1973, the Council on Aging of St. Lucie has spent 50+ years helping local seniors stay independent, healthy and connected. COASL serves over 25,000 older adults annually with programs like Meals on Wheels and senior dining sites (for nutritious meals and friendly check-ins), in-home personal care and respite for caregivers, adult day care for those with dementia, transportation to medical appointments and errands via the Community Transit system, and much more.

By offering these wraparound services – and with community support covering a third of its budget – the Council on Aging enables St. Lucie’s seniors to age with dignity in their own homes and community.
