👋 Happy Monday!
Welcome to this week’s edition of The Connection!
This week, we’re diving into Florida’s upcoming black bear hunt—the first in a decade—and the massive public response it’s stirred. We’ll also look at the latest job numbers, Port St. Lucie’s plan to close a major bulk waste drop-off site, and ways you can connect with fellow business leaders this week. Plus, our nonprofit spotlight shines on Habitat for Humanity of St. Lucie & Okeechobee, helping families build stronger futures.

🐝 What’s Buzzing: Local News
Florida’s first black bear hunt in 10 years sparks 160,000 applications
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) received over 160,000 applications for just 172 bear hunting permits in a controversial lottery. The hunt, scheduled for Dec. 6-28, 2025, has drawn backlash from conservation groups who argue development, not bear overpopulation, drives human-bear conflicts. Activists have applied for permits as a protest tactic to reduce actual hunting. Only one bear may be taken per permit, and females with cubs are off-limits.
Unemployment ticks up to 3.8%
Florida’s unemployment rate rose slightly in August to 3.8%, marking the first increase since April. Despite the bump, the state’s jobless rate remains below the national average (4.3%) for the 58th straight month. Over the past year, Florida added 98,200 jobs—with education, healthcare, and government roles leading gains.
PSL to close bulk waste drop-off center in January
The city will close its Solid Waste Convenient Drop-Off Center on Cameo Blvd. effective Jan. 5, citing declining use and high costs. The move will save PSL about $2 million per year. Residents can still dispose of bulk items via curbside collection (up to 2 cubic yards per pickup) or at the county landfill. “Closing this underused facility reflects our commitment to fiscal responsibility,” said City Manager Jesus Merejo.
